FAQ's & Fast Facts about Plank Wood Floors
Q. What are the "cuts
& grades" of plank flooring ?
A. Unfinished plank wood flooring comes in many grades, from
the high range like quartered sawn or rift, to the more common select
& better, the the lower grades of # 1 & # 2 common often
called "tavern" grade. The less the grade the more
imperfections as mineral streaks & knots are allowed.
Q. Can these floors be sanded and refinished?
A. Any solid wood floor product can be sanded and refinished.
If an
engineered plank wood flooring product, make sure a professional wood
floor contractors is called, using the proper sanding equipment to
insure damage (sand through) does not occur. (See How to Refinish)
Q. Where can plank wood floor be installed?
A. Random width Plank is installed in the same manner as
strip flooring, alternating courses by widths. Start with widest
boards, then the next width, etc., and repeat the pattern.
Manufacturers' instructions for fastening the flooring vary and should
be followed. Plank wood floors (solid) are more susceptible to the
effects of moisture, and expand at a high rate than strip floors. Thus
ALL & many consideration should be given when installation in
areas and parts of the home where moisture and humidity can play a
part in the performance of the product. When using wide
plank over 4" extra care is necessary for good performance since
the units move more with changing conditions. Proper
acclimation before and after installation is critical. After
acclimation and
before installation, sealing the back surface may help prevent some
cupping normally associated with wider widths. (See Installation Procedures)
Q. What species are manufactured in plank
flooring?
A. Domestic &
Exotic with many, many species
represented.
